There were 41 carbon bomb fossil fuel projects in Russia as of 2022, of which 23 had not yet started extraction. Carbon bombs are defined as a fossil fuel project that will emit at least a billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCO2) over its lifetime. In total, these projects in Russia have potential lifetime emissions of almost 120 GtCO2. The project with the highest potential emissions is the Gazprom developed Yamal Megaproject, at 11.2 GtCO2. The United States is the largest investor in Russian carbon bombs.
