Iceland, which itself is an island, is surrounded by several smaller islands. The largest of these is Heimaey with 14.7 square kilometers, which is is a part of the picturesque archipelago Vestmannaeyjar southwest of Iceland. In 1973, the island's inhabitants had to be evacuated because of a volcano eruption. Iceland's second largest island is Hrisey, followed by Hjorsey.
