Launched in 1999 by Tencent, the instant messenger QQ has become increasingly obsolete. Among its 558 million monthly active users across the world, male users accounted for about 51.2 percent, as of the third quarter of 2023. In the early 2022, Tencent embedded video game engine Unreal Engine in the updated version of QQ as the latest move to revitalize the app and to develop its metaverse presence.
