The Democratic Republic of the Congo registered the highest number of new displacements in Sub-Saharan Africa as of 2020. Nearly 2.5 million movements of people forcedly leaving their homes were recorded in the country that year. Most of those - some 2.2 million - were caused by conflict and violence, the same reason which had led to 1.7 million displacements in Ethiopia. Overall, Sub-Saharan Africa counted more than 10 million conflict and natural disaster displacements in the same period.

According to the source, the number of new displacements "refers to the number of
movements rather than the number of people displaced. If a family of four is caught up in fighting and flees to safety, then the settlement they are sheltering in is flooded and they have to move again, we count that as eight new displacements".
