Access to clean cooking fuels and technologies in Africa varied strongly between sub-regions. While 98 percent of the population in Northern Africa had access to clean cooking in 2018, the rate was at 10 percent in Central Africa - the lowest in the entire continent. As of 2019, accessibility to clean cooking, heating, and lightning in Africa covered on average 19 percent of the population.

According to the WHO Guidelines, the fuels and technologies that are considered clean include electricity, natural gas, liquified petroleum gas, biogas, ethanol, and solar.
