As of October 2020, there were over five million inpatients and outpatients receiving treatments for mental and behavioral disorders in Japan. Around 34 percent of them were treated for mood disorders such as bipolar affective disorders and depressive episodes.

The survey was conducted at medical facilities on one designated date set for each institution from three days in October.
The number of patients refers to those who were continuously receiving medical treatment (including those who did not receive medical treatment at medical institutions on the dates of the survey) calculated by the following formula:
number of patients receiving medical treatment = estimated number of inpatients + estimated number of initial visit outpatients + (estimated number of return visit outpatients × average interval since last visit × adjustment factor (6/7))
