Around 370 thousand kiloliters of makgeolli, a Korean rice wine, were shipped in South Korea in 2019. This was the lowest shipment volume of makgeolli in the last five years, around 10.9 percent less than in 2015. Likewise the value of makgeolli produced in 2019 was the lowest in the last five years and around 5.8 percent lower than in 2015.
The general downward trend is most likely due to competition with wine, makgeolli's short shelf life and the resulting need to buy more, and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and its effect on consumption, among others.
