Around 443 billion South Korean won's worth of makgeolli, a traditional Korean rice wine, was shipped in South Korea in 2019. This was the lowest value of makgeolli in the last five years, around 5.8 percent less than in 2015. Likewise the shipment volume of makgeolli in 2019 was the lowest in the last five years and around 10.9 percent lower than in 2015.The general downward trend is most likely due to competition with wine, makgeolli's short shelf life and the resulting need to buy more, and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and its effect on consumption, among others.
