Nearly 5.1 billion pounds of post-consumer plastic materials sourced in the United States were recovered for recycling in 2021. Bottles were the most recovered plastic type that year, at almost 2.9 billion pounds. In particular, PET bottles accounted for more than 65 percent of all U.S. sourced post-consumer plastic bottles recovered for recycling.
