According to a study conducted in 2020, technology use in the classroom in North America tended to increase the PISA reading score of school children. The use of data projectors were found to increase the PISA reading score by 39 points, the largest increase of any type of technology. The use of tablets, on the other hand, decreased students' reading scores by 17 points.

According to the OECD, the PISA reading score is an indicator for reading performance, and measures "the capacity to understand, use, and reflect on written texts to achieve goals, develop knowledge and potential, and participate in society."
