
Value of Chinese loans to Africa, by sector 2000-2020
African countries borrowed some 160 billion U.S. dollars from China in the period between 2000 and 2020. The transport sector was the main destination for the funding, accumulating 46.8 billion U.S. dollars. The energy sector followed, with 40.5 billion U.S. dollars, while roughly 18 billion U.S. dollars were granted to the mining sector. Overall, African governments and state-owned enterprises signed 1,188 loans with Chinese financiers in the period considered.
