Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, most surveyed museums in the United States did not utilize digital innovation processes or rarely use them. Overall, 35 percent of all museums involved in the research claimed not to use processes like human-centered design, co-creation, prototyping, iteration, and user testing. Meanwhile, 21 percent of the sample stated that they were aware of these tools but rarely used them. Looking at the different types of institutions, science museums were the ones more involved in digital innovation processes, with 13 percent of such organizations regularly using digital innovation tools as part of their regular workflows.
Is your museum using digital innovation processes?
A total of 584 museum staff responded from 476 museums, from all 50 states and from Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. Multiple individuals were allowed to respond from the same institution. In 58 institutions more than one staff member submitted a survey; 418 institutions had a single response from staff
