The production volume of low-malt beer (happoshu) in Japan amounted to around 396 thousand kiloliters in fiscal year 2022. Happoshu refers to beer-like beverages with a malt content below 50 percent in Japan. The low-malt alcoholic beverage was considered a cheaper alternative to beer until tax rates were raised on malt beverages.
