In 2022/23, approximately 58 percent of responding farming businesses with a high economic performance (top 25% of businesses) in England stated that they used soil nutrient software to help determine fertilizer applications. Compared to 2017/18 the share of respondents who said they use such software grew by 21 percent. The smallest share of respondents who said they use these software packages could be found among farm businesses with low economic performance.

The source notes: 'Results are weighted to represent the whole population of farm businesses that have at least 25,000 Euros of standard output as recorded in the annual June Survey of Agriculture and Horticulture. In 2018/19, this accounted for approximately 57,100 farm businesses.'
Furthermore: 'From 2018/19, the classification of farms is based on 2013 standard output coefficients. 2017/18 results have been recalculated and presented in this release to allow comparability between 2017/18 and 2018/19.'

Farm Economic performance Economic performance for each farm is measured as the ratio between economic output (mainly sales revenue) and inputs (costs). The inputs for this calculation include an adjustment for unpaid manual labor. The higher the ratio, the higher the economic efficiency and performance.
