According to a survey conducted in March 2021 in Japan, almost 53 percent of respondents aged 20 to 29 years claimed that their online purchases increased slightly during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. That age group also showed the highest share of consumers not making online purchases, with 23.5 percent.
As the Japanese government asked citizens to practice self-restraint and remain at home following the global outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, online retail emerged as a popular alternative to in-store retail.
