According to a survey conducted in February 2023 in Japan, close to 30 percent of respondents reported an increase in online purchases since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Around 3.4 percent stated that they purchased a lot more online compared to their shopping behavior prior to the pandemic.
As the Japanese government asked citizens to practice self-restraint and remain at home following the global outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, online retail emerged as a popular alternative to in-store retail. While restrictions have been lifted since then, a share of users continued the use of online shopping services.
