Electric vehicles by month in New Zealand 2019
Electric vehicle registrations
Examining growth in the number of new electric vehicles registered in New Zealand over the last several years reveals a similar growth trend. In 2019, there were just over seven thousand new registrations of electric vehicles, a significant increase from the previous year, and overall – in 2013 there were just 39 electric vehicles registered in the country.
Licensed vehicles and new car sales
The majority of licensed vehicles in New Zealand are cars; as of April 2020, there are 2.17 million cars registered, compared to around seven hundred thousand other vehicles, including tractors. Notably, there are only around 220 thousand buses and coaches registered in New Zealand. There are currently around one hundred thousand cars sold in New Zealand every year; in 2019, 104.09 thousand cars were sold. This represents a slight decrease from the previous year. The industry has experienced growth over the last decade, following a drop in 2009 to around 54 thousand cars sold. This drop could be attributed to the global financial crisis that occurred around 2009 to 2010.
