The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hit museums worldwide hard, with cultural institutions across the globe forced to close for long periods in 2020 and 2021. According to a March 2021 study in the United States, roughly 61 percent of surveyed museum employees working part-time reported having lost income due to cuts implemented during the pandemic. Reductions in salary, benefits, and/or hours caused part-time museum staff in the United States to lose a median of around eight thousand U.S. dollars since March 2020.

*The survey count only refers to respondents indicated as paid museum staff. The figure was calculated by Statista based on the following information provided by the source: "The survey closed on March 17, having collected 2,666 usable responses, mostly from people whose primary employment status (pre-pandemic) was as paid museum staff (87 percent), and also representing people who self-identify as independent professionals/consultants (seven percent), volunteers (four percent), students (three percent), and retirees (two percent). A small number of respondents
opted to select more than one option which is why these numbers add up to 103 percent".
