According to a survey among young Chinese directors, 39 percent of respondents earned less than 190,000 yuan in the year prior to 2019. Only three percent of the respondents said that they had a net income of more than one million yuan last year. The majority of the respondents rated the satisfaction level of their working status as fair.

The survey was conducted among young directors who:
1) were born between 1979 to 1999
2) directed at least a feature film or a TV series or two award-winning short films
3) have at least one work that has been played on a public platform or scheduled to be played.
4) currently work as directors.
Note: 1 yuan equals approximately 0.14 U.S. dollars and 0.13 euros (as of May 2020).
