This statistic displays the largest machine tools companies ranked by number of active machine tools patent families owned worldwide as of April 2020. The ranking is based on data provided by PatentSight. As of April 16th, Nippon Steel's patent portfolio included 6,362 patent families, making the company the world's largest owner of machine tools patents. The Japanese DISCO Corporation ranked second with 3,901 families.

Their subordinated groups are included i.e. B21B 1.

The owner of a patent includes all patents owned by a company and its subsidiaries (by at least 50%) based on comprehensive research on corporate structures, M&A, Spin-offs, company names changes, patent transactions. PatentSight also tracks former names of companies and subsidiaries, ongoing mergers and acquisitions, acquisitions of the past, reassignments, companies that have the same applicant, and transliterations by patent offices.
