Poland: unemployment rate during COVID-19 pandemic 2024

In May 2024, the unemployment rate in Poland amounted to five percent, which was lower than a year ago when it reached 5.1 percent. According to the Central Statistical Office (GUS), the number of job offers submitted to labor offices slightly increased.

Characteristics of unemployed people in Poland

At the end of 2022, the number of unemployed Poles reached 812.3 thousand. Throughout 2008 and 2022, the number of unemployed Poles with lower secondary and incomplete primary education decreased. However, they remain at the top percent of unemployed people in the country. Unemployment is more severe among people at a young age. In 2022, the age group 25-34 and 35-44 were leading and shared similar numbers amounting to around 200 thousand people unemployed. Taking gender into account, in Poland, there were 61 thousand more women on registered unemployment than men.

Job offers and requirements in Poland

In June 2023, the number of monthly job offers submitted to labor offices had increased slightly, which caused better prospects for the unemployed Poles. On the other hand, in 2022, there were over 115 thousand vacancies and 89 thousand newly created jobs. According to online job platforms in 2020, all requirements for job candidates had slightly decreased due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic. However, one of the most required skills for job application in Poland was an experience. The following requirement for job application on online platforms was education.

Registered unemployment does not include: persons undergoing traineeships or internships, persons undergoing occupational preparation of adults and social utility works and directed to employment agency within the framework of activation actions appointment.
