TV drama viewership share in China 2020, by TV channel type

More Chinese people watched TV dramas on the provincial satellite TV channels which shared 56.5 percent of the total viewership in 2020. Soap opera was the most popular television program genre in the country. Ahead of the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic in 2019, the Chinese television regulator banned showing historical dramas about scheming and idol dramas. Instead, TV channels were asked to broadcast a list of 86 patriotic shows.
