Leading owners of data security patents worldwide 2012-2021

IBM was the largest worldwide owner of active data security patent families. As of December 31, 2021, the company owned 5,223 families. The second largest owner was Huawei with 4,449 active patent families. The company was closely followed by Microsoft which had seven patent families less than Huawei. The owner of a patent includes all patents owned by a company and its subsidiaries (by at least 50%) based on comprehensive research on corporate structures, M&A, Spin-offs, company names changes, patent transactions.
