Leading online stores in Russia 2023, by sales value
In 2023, Wildberries remained the leading online retailer in Russia with a total of 2.14 trillion Russian rubles in sales. The second-largest marketplace in the country, Ozon, followed with 1.36 trillion Russian rubles in sales in that year.
Wildberries as the Russian e-commerce market leader
Online retailer Wildberries was founded in 2004 and quickly became popular in Russia. The net profit of the company spiked in 2018, and by 2019, it increased to more than 4.4 billion Russian rubles. In 2022, approximately every third Russian had made a purchase on that online platform. The variety of offered products and availability to customers put Wildberries as the leading online retailer in the country, overcoming Russia’s largest airline Aeroflot by sales value.
Online shopping during COVID-19 in Russia
With an already expanding number of online shoppers in Russia, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic only facilitated the matter. Forecasts suggested that over 71 million Russians would be shopping online by 2024, indicating an increase by nearly ten million compared to 2020. During the pandemic and consequent lockdown, Russians were able to discover services of online retailers they had not previously used, such as e-grocery or other types of e-commerce.
