Florida is a summer hotspot for Airbnb listings. In June, four out of the top 10 U.S. cities by active Airbnb and HomeAway listings were located in the state. Kissimmee in the Orlando metro had the most listings with 47,875 open or rented listings. Davenport, Miami and Panama City Beach also made the list that includes entire home, room and shared room rentals.
Another state popular with Airbnb and HomeAway hosts was California, with a combined 32,500 listings between Los Angeles and San Diego. New York City came in second place with almost 38,000 listings, according to data from analytics website AirDNA.
Airbnb held a 19 percent share of the of U.S. lodging market in 2018, while HomeAway had a share of 11 percent. Counting only leisure travel sales, Airbnb surpassed Hilton and its subsidiaries in 2018.
But Airbnb’s success is also angering some. The rental of residential property as year-round vacation homes is causing the state of Florida a loss of tax revenues in addition to bringing large amounts of tourists into neighborhoods not zoned for short-term rental use. In New York, the online platform has been in the news in connection with rising rents caused by an increasing number of apartments being tied up as vacation rentals.
