A massive jump in the number Brits becoming Germans in 2016 showed how a lot of expats were trying to cushion the possible negative fall-out for them and their families with an impending Brexit down the road. By 2017, this trend was in full flow, increasing from 2,865 naturalisations to 7,493. According to the most recent figures from the German Statistical Office, the amount of Brits becoming German in 2019 saw a massive jump to 14,600 as the final stages of Brexit took place and with it the right to dual citizenship with EU countries evaporated.
