IKEA will open 3 new stores in the UK by 2018. The new branches in Sheffield, Greenwich and Exeter will create 1,300 jobs across various departments. There will then be a total of 22 British IKEAs, which would make Britain, as things stand at present, the country with the third most stores in Europe. But IKEA also plans on expanding their store number in several other countries. For example in Eastern Europe, as well as in, the already biggest market, Germany, plus many more.
As our graphic shows, the UK currently has only the sixth most stores of European countries. This relatively low density of outlets makes it hard for people in some regions to reach one of the Swedish furniture stores in reasonable time. And as the pace of the IKEA online business is picking up quite slowly, despite the launch of several own parcel pick up points, building stores in proximity to as many consumers as possible is still very important for the Scandinavian retailer.
