U.S. President Donald Trump wants to build a wall on the Mexico-U.S. border. This would be a costly exercise. Many estimates have been floated since he proposed building the barrier during his campaign to become President. Trump himself estimated it could cost up to $12 billion.
Now the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has for the first time come up with an official estimate of what the fortification might cost. It has calculated the bill could stand at $21.6 billon. The border barrier would actually consist of a mix of fences and stretches of wall, to seal of 1,250 miles of the 1,990 mile long U.S.-Mexico border. 650 miles are already fortified.
