Tax free bike schemes and improved cycling networks in major cities that are haunted by severe traffic congestion have resulted in more and more people commuting to and from work by bike. Those that take their cycling more seriously will record their journey using a GPS watch, and log their efforts on Strava, a social media network for athletes that boasts more than 1.2 million active users, including Lance Armstrong.
According to user-generated data by Strava Insights, with an average commute of 18.6 miles, riders in the Italian metropolis Milan ride the farthest. The data, however, also indicates that a mere 386 Strava riders commute on a daily basis in Milan. This is relatively little compared to the 9,532 Londoners that commute daily by bike and record their activity.
Furthermore, the data shows that Australians are more likely to be early birds. 44 percent of all Sydney commuters ride between 5am and 8am. In Milan, 11 percent get their blood pumping that early.
