Portugal recently made headlines after running for four days straight on renewable energy alone. The country generated zero emissions for 107 hours, after being powered by wind, solar and hydro-generated electricity. Data from Eurostat and the Renewable Energy Directive provides an overview of the European nations making the greatest strides in renewable energy.
Between 2013 and 2014 (the latest time frame EU-wide figures are available), Sweden had the greatest renewable energy share (RES) in the European Union, 51 percent. The UK is at the very opposite end of the spectrum with renewables accounting for a mere 5.7 percent of energy generation. This infographic was recently featured in an article in the Independent.
