Every user of Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 has probably seen it: Microsoft’s not so subtle reminder to upgrade to Windows 10, the latest version of the world’s most popular operating system for desktop PCs. While Microsoft’s decision to offer Windows 10 as a free upgrade to millions of users was received positively in the beginning, a lot of that goodwill has been destroyed by the frequency at which users are reminded to make the switch.
Many users have taken to Twitter to vent their frustration with Microsoft’s slightly annoying popup notifications and the internet is full of instructions for how to get rid of them. Now it appears as if the “problem” will soon solve itself. Microsoft has confirmed that the “Get Windows 10” app will automatically disappear from PCs after July 29th.
So far, Microsoft’s ambitious upgrade campaign has delivered mixed results. According to StatCounter data charted below, Windows 10 adoption has surpassed Windows 8/8.1 earlier this year but is still far behind Windows 7. It remains doubtful if many users of Windows 7 will make the switch between now and the end of July, but if they don’t, it won’t be for a lack of reminders.
