Informal employment accounts for more than 90 percent of agricultural jobs worldwide, according to data by the International Labour Organization. According to their 2023 report ‘Women and men in the informal economy’, agriculture, domestic work and construction are the sectors with the largest share of informal employment.
Global averages do, however, hide regional disparities. For example, while agriculture has the biggest share of informal workers worldwide, it's not the case in Asia and the Pacific or Europe and Central Asia, where it comes second to the domestic work and own-use production sector.
Across all regions, there is a higher share of women in informal employment in the manufacturing sector, while men are overrepresented in construction work.
