Nike is the best-known and most popular sportswear brand in the U.S. according to the Statista Global Consumer Survey Brand Profiler, but German company Adidas is hot on its heels. 59 percent of Americans surveyed by Statista said they owned at least one Nike item, followed by 49 percent who said they had something by Adidas in their closet. However, 88 percent said they would purchase Nike again, followed by 85 percent who said the same about Adidas.
The brands closest to rivaling the two global sportswear behemoths stateside are U.S.-based companies Champion and Under Armour. While they are almost as well known as Nike and Adidas and consumers are almost as willing to purchase them again, ownership of the them lagged the two big brands at just 34 and 38 percent, respectively. Both smaller brands also couldn’t create as much buzz lately. Yet, Adidas would probably have liked to skip the media frenzy surrounding their pausing of a collaboration with rap artist Ye (formally Kanye West), who creates the popular Yeezy sneaker line with the company since 2015. The rapper has become known for his increasingly controversial standpoints.
