The economy has emerged as the issue in the forefront of the minds of UK adults in the last few weeks and months. When asked by YouGov to name up to three issues which are the most important facing the UK at the moment, in September 2022 71 percent cited the economy - a long way ahead of anything else and a massive leap compared to the same time in 2021.
During the beginning of the pandemic, 'health' shot to the forefront of people's minds, and continued to switch places with 'economy' in 2020 and 2021 at the top of the ranking as the financial impact of Covid-19 also began to be felt. Since the end of January 2022 though, the issue of the economy has been inflated to a great degree. Prior to the pandemic, Brexit and leaving the EU was by far the issue most chosen by respondents to the survey. In 2022, despite its role in the state of the economy, it has taken a back seat, falling by 7 percentage points since September 2021 and only being selected by 18 percent of people.
