The number of people living within 50km of conflict is rising. As our chart shows, around 555 million people lived in or near areas of conflict in 1990, versus almost 1.2 billion in 2020. The majority lived within 50km of a lower intensity of conflict, where 1-25 people were killed a year. According to a United Nations Development Programme 2022 special report, some 200 million children lived in conflict areas in 1990, compared with 452 million - 19 percent of all children - in 2020
