Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s new social media network Truth Social is attracting male, college-educated Millennials, according to new data from the Statista Global Consumer Survey. The survey, conducted in March 2022, also found that Reddit users and gamers or esport fans were more likely to be using the platform than almost any other group.
Truth Social has been off to a fairly rocky start since its launch in February. Characterized by glitches and long waiting lists of people unable to download it, the app has failed to garner as much of a fanbase as presumably hoped by its creators. GCS data found that while 25 percent of U.S. social media users were aware of the brand in 2022, only 3 percent of them had used the app in the past four weeks and only 2 percent were saying that they are likely to use the brand again.
According to Forbes, the app has around two million active users, versus Twitter’s 300 million. While Truth Social’s following seems to pale in comparison, it’s worth noting that it achieved top place as the most downloaded free app on the Apple App Store for several days between April 26 and May 1, as listed by Sensor Tower. This streak of success was short-lived, however, as it tailed off quickly. According to Forbes contributor John Brandon, Truth Social’s surge in popularity is at least partly thanks to the buzz created around Elon Musk’s decision to buy Twitter, which caused people unhappy with the takeover to seek out alternative social networks.
