While the European Union boasts many well established and regarded bike brands, companies have been increasingly outsourcing their production to other parts of the world in recent years, particularly Asia. Companies from outside the block have also been gaining traction within the EU as demand for bikes soared due to Covid-19.
Last year, EU member states imported nearly 5 million bikes from non-member states with a total value of €930 million according to Eurostat. That represents a 35 percent increase on 2019. Last year, Cambodia accounted for nearly a quarter of the EU's total bike imports. China had the second highest share of imports at 17 percent.
