Global cases of COVID-19 have surpassed 1 million infections, with nearly 60,000 dead worldwide.
Italy began a massive quarantine of the country’s northern Lombardy region early in March and has since extended this lockdown to the entire country indefinitely. While the United States has overtaken them in total number of cases, Italy still leads the world in total deaths thus far.
Total cases of COVID-19 have quickly increased in Italy, with a peak of 172,434 as of April 17. Daily new cases, however, have started to steadily drop, with just 3,493 new cases reported on April 17. The death toll in the country has continued to soar, reaching 22,745 as of April 17 - the second-highest toll of any country in the world behind the U.S. Overall, the recovery rate is reported at 64.4 percent of all cases in Italy as of April 17.
