During an Irish television appearance, former UKIP leader Nigel Farage said he believes Ireland will eventually leave the European Union. However, RTÉ's Claire Byrne strongly rebuked the British politician, saying that the latest figures show that 88 percent of the Irish population want to stay in the EU and "that's not going to happen". A new poll now shows that the Irish public would overwhelmingly opt for a united Ireland over a hard border if forced to choose between the two.
The research was carried out by Amárach on behalf of the Claire Byrne Live show and it found that a whopping 86 percent of Irish respondents would opt for a united Ireland over a hard border. When it comes to the more general question of a united Ireland, 54 percent said they would be in favour while 21 percent said they are against it. 25 percent of respondents didn't know.
