A year ago, the #MeToo movement came into existence after several women accused Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment and misconduct. Actress Alyssa Milano started using the hashtag #MeToo and it was tweeted over half a million times overnight. It continued to spread virally and proved successful in raising awareness of widespread sexual assault and harassment, particulalry in the workplace.
A year on, the U.S. is in the midst of a ferocious debate about sexual harassment given the claims of misconduct brought against U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. At the end of September, Bill Cosby became the first celebrity sentenced for a sex crime since the birth of the movement. The following infographic was created using a report from AFP and it provides a timeline of the #MeToo movement.
