French President Emmanuel Macron has condemned attacks on Myanmar's Rohingya Muslim minority, saying they amount to "genocide". Earlier this week, the UNHCR reported that 415,000 Rohingya refugees have crossed into Bangladesh, 225,000 of whom are living in makeshift shelters.
The grim scale of the crisis can be seen from the following infographic. The number of people fleeing Myanmar is now triple the number of refugees who have tried to enter Europe via the Mediterranean so far this year. The sheer number of refugees has also overtaken Mediterranean migrant numbers for the whole of 2016. UN human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein has described the attacks against the Rohingya as a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing".
