Boko Haram is Still Taking Lives in Nigeria
Nigeria
At the start of the month, Nigeria’s chief of army staff Lt Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai claimed that his military had defeated ISIS-affiliated terror group Boko Haram. In an interview with the BBC he said "militarily, Boko Haram has been defeated", also adding, "I don't think anybody has said Boko Haram has been eliminated".
Indeed, Boko Haram hasn't been eliminated, and it is arguable that it hasn't even been defeated. Using analysis from SBM Intel, our infographic shows that the presence of the group is still being felt, and in the most tragically tangible way possible. In June there were 53 deaths attributed to the Islamists in Nigeria, making a total of 200 for 2017 so far.
