MAUs of leading casual dating apps in China 2024

Nov 25, 2024 | Online Dating

In September 2024, Momo remained the most popular mobile app for online dating in China, with about 66 million monthly active users. The company acquired another popular Chinese dating app, Tantan, in 2018, further securing its dominance in China's casual dating app market.

Momo and Tantan

Momo and Tantan belong to the same internet company, Hello Group Inc., which reported to have an annual net revenue of 12 billion yuan in 2023. Started as a location-based app, Momo has gradually evolved into a platform for social interactions and dating. On the other hand, Tantan is often referred to as the "Chinese Tinder" because of its swipe-left, swipe-right mechanism. The duo had been pairing users primarily based on their physical appearance, leading to allegations of fostering a hookup-oriented culture. They also temporarily halted certain in-app features in response to regulatory scrutiny in 2019 regarding disseminating pornographic content on their platforms.

Soul

Soul, backed by Tencent, stands out in the social app landscape with its inventive elements like virtual socializing, matching, and interest mapping. In contrast to the gender distribution of users on Momo and Tantan, Soul boasts a higher percentage of female users, reaching 35.6 percent as of March 2022. Positioned as a "Social Metaverse for the Young," it is preparing for an initial public offering in Hong Kong following a prosperous year in 2022, during which it generated approximately 219 million U.S. dollars in revenue.

Export value of leading agricultural commodities produced in Australia FY 2024

Nov 25, 2024 | Agriculture

Beef and veal were Australia’s leading agricultural export products, at a value of 12.4 billion Australian dollars in the financial year 2024. Australia is also a popular exporter of wheat, the export value of which equaled 9.87 billion Australian dollars in the same year.

Beef as a major agricultural export

In terms of domestic production, Queensland was the largest beef-producing state, with production of both grass and grain-fed beef common. Surprisingly, the forecasted per capita consumption of beef in Australia was expected to decrease over the next few years. While local demand may drop, the global meat demand will likely more than compensate for the difference. In fact, Australia already exports the majority of the meat it produces. The primary export markets for beef include the United States, China, and Japan.

Future challenges

With Australia looking set to establish itself as an even bigger contributor to the global market, adoption of new technologies will be important to ensure production can keep up with demand. Challenges revolve around having a large enough semi-skilled workforce, accurately forecasting yield and harvest timings, and reliance on seasonal workers. Agriculture technology, or AgriTech, may hold the solutions. Globally, the value of smart farming looks set to expand to a multi-billion-dollar market. Australia may need to quicken the pace of AgriTech adoption to stay competitive in this market.
