As of 2023, approximately 10.4 thousand people were members of a crime syndicate, while another ten thousand were associate members. While the number of associate members experienced a surge and peaked at about 43.3 thousand in 2007, the number of proper members remained on its general downward course, and both declined significantly in the subsequent years.
Japanese transnational criminal organizations and their members are widely known as yakuza.
