Japan: distribution of certified organic farmland by type

Upland fields accounted for over 38 percent of all certified organic farmland in Japan in 2022. Organically cultivated grazing land made up over 26 percent of officially certified farmland in the country.
The Act of Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS) certifies organic agricultural production through third-party inspections. Organic agricultural production, as defined by JAS, uses methods, which promote ecosystem health and refrain from using chemically synthesized fertilizers, pesticides, and genetic recombination technologies.
