Mexico: tequila production volume1995-2023, by type
In 2023, the production volume of 100% agave tequila amounted to 427.2 million liters, while the volume of mixed tequila reached 171.5 million liters. Due to the boom in popularity on a global scale, tequila production has increased recently. Between 2018 and 2023, the production volume of 100% agave tequila increased by 151 percent.
Tequila 100% is made, as the name suggests, 100% from blue agave. This type is considered pure, it has a range of flavors and aromas, and it is preferred by tequila enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. On the other hand, the tequila without the 100% agave label is usually mixed with other sugars during the fermentation process. Sometimes called "tequila mixto", this type of tequila is recommended for cocktails.
Regardless of whether they are 100% agave tequila or a tequila mixto, all varieties are made from the blue agave that grows in specific parts of Mexico. While most of it comes from the state of Jalisco, it can also be found in some municipalities in neighboring states. In 2023, the total production volume of tequila reached over 598 million liters.
