Main crop products Myanmar 2021, by production volume
The production volume trend
Even though the production volume of paddy was more than twice of its nearest competitor, the numbers followed a gradual downward trend from 2012 to 2021 with production values of approximately 26.22 million tons recorded in 2012. However, a gradual upward trend was noticed in production volumes of sugar cane since 2012.
Factors affecting production volume
In the 2016 financial year, a marginal drop was observed in the production volume of paddy, which further deteriorated due to environmental challenges such as drought and greenhouse emissions. Additionally, the dependence on water supply, fertilizer, and pesticides reduced production volumes further. While rice has been the major agricultural export from the country, beans and pulses currently account for higher export earnings than the rice production industry. Moreover, the domestic consumption of milled rice was expected to decrease with the global change in eating habits towards fast food.
