Global average atmospheric abundance of methane 1990-2023, by month
The monthly globally-averaged atmospheric methane abundance reached a high of 1,924.65 parts per billion (ppb) in December 2022. Globally-averaged annual atmospheric methane concentrations have risen dramatically over the past three decades. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and has a greater global warming potential (GWP) than carbon dioxide.
