Originally founded as Hyundai Civil Works Company in 1947, Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. (Hyundai E&C) was later created with the merger of Hyundai Construction and Hyundai Engineering in 1999. Notable figures, such as former South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, have held leading positions at the company. Not only is it one of the largest engineering, procurement, and construction contractors in the South Korean oil and gas industry but also one of the largest construction firms worldwide in terms of revenue.

The company takes part in multiple projects that cover areas of renewable and nuclear energy, structural designs for infrastructure such as bridges and public facilities, as well as residential building construction. Almost half of the company’s sales revenue comes from construction and housing, and it was the second-largest construction company by estimated building capacity in South Korea in 2024. It has also been responsible for a number of notable construction projects overseas. Beyond bridges and roads, the company has built several nuclear reactors. As for its financial performance, the value of its total assets rose by more than five trillion South Korean won from 2020 to 2023. Hyundai E&C seeks to increase the proportion of sustainable products against total revenue as part of its efforts to coin itself as a firm dedicated to sustainability. However, the company’s greenhouse gas emissions have increased from years prior, likely due to the relaxation of COVID-19-related restrictions.
