Women's EURO 2022 - statistics & facts

The UEFA Women’s Championship, also known as the UEFA Women’s Euro, is an international soccer tournament held every four years. The qualifiers are contested between 52 European nations, before the best 16 teams progress through to the finals. The first UEFA-sanctioned tournament took place in 1984, with the most recent edition taking place in England in 2022.

The 2022 finals were held in England in July 2022. The hosts were the pre-tournament favorites, with a simulation giving them a 21 percent chance of glory. This premonition ultimately came true, with England emerging victorious and "bringing football home" after a tense 2-1 extra time victory against old rivals Germany in the final at Wembley. However, while Wembley boasted the largest capacity at the championships, England's opening game, a 1-0 victory against Austria, was held at Manchester United's home, Old Trafford. The tournament opener, which saw Beth Mead bag the only goal, was the highest-attended game in UEFA European Women's Championship history. Almost 69 thousand fans watched the game live, but this record lasted mere weeks - the final at Wembley smashed the record as over 87 thousand fans watched England lift the trophy.

Euro legends

Despite falling at the final hurdle in 2022, the German national team has dominated the championships since the very beginning, lifting the trophy eight times, including six times in a row between 1995 and 2013. The only other country to have won multiple EURO titles is Norway, who were champions in 1987 and 1993. Given Germany's dominance in the finals, it comes as no surprise that several Germans feature in the all-time leading goalscorers in the UEFA European Women's Championship. However, when taking qualifiers into account, it is Italy's Carolina Morace who tops the goalscoring list, having bagged 42 goals for her country in EURO games.
